Erotic imagery not only plays an important role in Tantra, but also in mainstream Hinduism. Sex is divine and is the basis of creation. The Tantras affirm that that one cannot separate the body from spirituality and to achieve liberation, one must work through the body. In the purest sense, sexual union is also seen as a way to connect with the divine.
