jacquard woven photo collage
I chose pictures of women working with textiles in different cultures and made a collage of them making each other. The idea is to communicate that cultures and people are interconnected. There is no one pure breed of a community, culture or people. It has become commonly acceptable to shun anything or anybody that’s remotely different or unfamiliar to us. What we practice as culture is a wonderful amalgam of several different traditions, beliefs and values that are constantly in flux, everchanging and ever evolving. Cultures were not cultivated in isolation and are certainly not set in stone. We could be proud of our past, our stories and histories, and we should be. But it would serve us well to embrace new ideologies, learn about different cultures, or at the very least admire and learn to co-exist with them.
